Three kid-friendly hikes in Las Cruces to check out this spring

The weather in Las Cruces is warming up, and it’s the perfect time to pack up the kids, some snacks and hit the trails! Check out these three family-friendly local hikes from FIT4MOM mama Hibah Ayaz, who runs What Should We Do - Las Cruces.

Lower Mogollan Trail at Leasburg Dam State Park

This is a flat 0.76 mile out-and-back dirt trail that goes through a "tunnel" of tall salt-cedar trees. Bring your strollers and binoculars along for this hike, as you will likely stop to spot birds along the way. If you go during months when the Rio Grande is not flowing, you will surprisingly find small, shallow pools of water due to natural springs. These pools are fun for kids to splash through and find small fish and turtles.

Upland Trail at Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park

This 0.7-mile loop trail is a flat mostly dirt path that has some sandy portions. My daughter loves to collect the many screwbean mesquite pods that line the trail. After your hike, you can enjoy your lunch in the peaceful native plant garden or let the kids learn and play inside the Visitor Center, which has a few fun activities designed for little ones.

Slot Canyon

Imagine a narrow winding trail through towering sandstone walls. Go in the summer and you will find much relief from the blistering heat. Go at sunset and you will be greeted with beautiful orange hues and swirling patterns within the scalloped walls. Your kids will enjoy following the twists and turns of the canyon. The trail is about 0.5 mile to the opening of the canyon. You can opt to take the whole loop once through the canyon (which is 2.5 miles) or turn around and let the kids go back through for twice the fun! Heads up—this location has no services, so pack plenty of water and plan accordingly!

About the author:

I am Hibah, the mom behind What Should We Do - Las Cruces. The idea was born shortly after my move to Las Cruces when I realized how much Southern New Mexico had to offer with its outdoor richness, history and cool activities. I wanted to share my finds with parents to encourage them to get out and experience fun opportunities with their kids. I love being outdoors and exploring the Las Cruces and surrounding areas with my kids. We like to spend time in nature on one of the many nearby trails.

Thank you, Hibah! Visit What Should We Do - Las Cruces on Facebook or Instagram to follow more of her adventures!
