Each month, we're celebrating a member of FIT4MOM Las Cruces for her commitment to a healthy lifestyle and dedication to FIT4MOM.
This month, we're spotlighting a mom who comes to many of our classes each month, and also crushes Run Club+ and Body Well sessions! Meet our Mom of the Month for October: Amy Protiva Gonzalez
Tell us about who is in your family!
I am the wife to my husband Michael Gonzalez and together we have a 2 yr old daughter, Xochitl Estrella.
Where is your hometown?
My hometown is Norman, OK
How did you find FIT4MOM?
I met with a lactation specialist named Kimberly at Little Steps Pediatrics and Baby Cafe and she encouraged me to try FIT4MOM.
What is/was your career?
I work for the City of Las Cruces as a Cashier at the Regional Aquatic Center, and before that I was a Youth Services Monitor/Art Lead for the CLC After School Program.
How long have you been a member of FIT4MOM Las Cruces, and what has it done for you?
I have been a member of FIT4MOM Las Cruces since February 2025. I got a class pass in late 2024 then I got a little busy during the holidays, but I loved it so much that I became a regular member soon after. FIT4MOM has had such a positive impact on both my postpartum health and mental health, and has given Xochitl and I a chance to be active and meet some amazing mamas and kids!
What is your favorite class? And your favorite exercise move?
Aside from Friday Stroller Strides, my favorite class is Body Boost! My favorite exercise is plie squats with bicep curls.
What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?
Something that has surprised me about is how quickly time passes. As the saying goes, the nights are long but the days are short. I have found a really good balance in my family life, work life and social life and I truly cherish all the little moments.
What are three of your favorite things?
I love to crochet, sit down with cup of coffee or tea and a good book, and spend time with my family and friends!
What is your proudest mommy moment so far?
Michael and I have shared our love of reading with Xochitl from the very beginning and I am so proud of her when she brings one of us a book and then snuggles down with us to read. I am so proud of her growing independence too, especially when she says "I did it!" after trying something herself.
What advice would you give to a new mother?
Be kind to yourself. Find your village and don't be afraid to ask for advice or help if you need it.
We are so lucky to have Amy in our village. It wouldn't be the same without her and Xochitl!
