Each month, we're celebrating a member of FIT4MOM Las Cruces for her commitment to a healthy lifestyle and dedication to FIT4MOM.
This month, we're spotlighting a mom whose career is built upon helping families in our community! Meet our Mom of the Month for June: Alyssa Gallardo-Guevara
Tell us about who is in your family!
We are a family of four: my husband, myself, and our two daughters, Soleil (3) and Stella (15 months). We have two dogs, Lando and Boba, and a cat named Kiki.
Where is your hometown?
I was born in San Diego, California, but grew up in Silver City, New Mexico.
How did you find FIT4MOM?
I discovered FIT4MOM on Instagram when Soleil was a baby in a small town, so I was excited to finally join when we moved to Las Cruces.
What is/was your career?
I am a full-time mom and a part-time occupational therapist. I work in early intervention services, serving families with children from birth to three years old. I am also a certified breastfeeding specialist, sleep consultant, and perinatal mental health professional. My passion is helping families navigate their new roles and routines when welcoming a baby into their lives.
How long have you been a member of FIT4MOM Las Cruces, and what has it done for you?
I have been a member for almost three years. Being a member has given me a sense of community in a town where I didn't have friends or family. Moving to a new town with a young family and navigating a new chronic illness diagnosis was incredibly isolating and challenging, but I am so grateful to have this community where I can move my body, make new friends, and enjoy being a mom.
What is your favorite class? And your favorite exercise move?
My favorite class is Stroller Barre. My favorite exercise move is anything that requires me to focus and maintain my balance.
What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?
While it’s incredible as an OT to watch my daughters learn and grow, it’s bittersweet to see them grow so fast. What has surprised me most about motherhood is realizing the sheer strength it requires. It has given me a deep appreciation for just how amazing and resilient mothers are!
What are three of your favorite things?
Naps, walks, and ice cream.
What is your proudest mommy moment so far?
My proudest mommy moment so far is the way Soleil has begun incorporating strategies to help regulate big emotions like asking for a hug, taking deep breaths, or taking some quiet time in her room.
What advice would you give to a new mother?
My advice that I would give to a new mother is to lean on others and find your village. Whether you join a group, reach out to friends or family, or lean on professionals, community and connection are your lifelines as you navigate your new roles and routines.
We are so lucky to have Alyssa in our village. It wouldn't be the same without her!
